<image:title>Demolition Projects</image:title>
<image:caption>In 2016 the Duke Energy Power Plant, located about five miles north of Terre Haute, IN, was shut down and began a four-year demolition phase. The plant opened in 1953 and produced 220 million megawatt hours of electricity over its 63 years of operation, supplying power to hospitals, schools, industries, and homes. Deemed too expensive to upgrade with new pollution controls to meet current environmental regulations for air pollution, it was decided that the steel framed power plant would be demolished. Special Inspections & Design provided specialty structural engineering services to develop a safe, phased demolition plan that would allow different portions of the structure to be removed at a time. The exterior columns in the gallery area of Boiler House 6 high rise were supported by roof framing of the low-rise adjacent Turbine House. SID performed an in-depth structural stability analysis to determine if the propped cantilever framing of the gallery area could successfully support itself as a true cantilever upon the removal of the Turbine House supports. Based on this analysis, the low-rise structure was able to be demolished first while preserving the high-rise structure for future demolition. SID is currently involved in the complete deconstruction of this entire facility.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In 2018, a new bridge was constructed to carry Highway 47 over the Missouri River and a Union Pacific Railroad rail line in Washington, MO. The original bridge, deemed functionally deficient, was a steel truss structure constructed in the 1930s. The original bridge was approximately 2,500 ft long and consisted of approximately 2,200 tons of steel framing supported on reinforced concrete piers. Special Inspections & Design provided specialty structural engineering services to facilitate the safe demolition of the original structure. This included inspecting the bridge and original design documentation to assess its condition and determine the best demolition method; preparing a site-specific phased demolition plan detailing the order of operations for the demolition process; creating a separate site-specific demolition plan for the span over the railroad designed to protect the rail line and minimize disruption to rail operations; determining the location of the pre-cut lines and the weights of the cut sections to ensure the barge-mounted cranes would be able to lift each section; analyzing the bridge structure for dead and wind loads in the weakened condition; providing pre-cut plans and details specifying the location, process and dimensions for each pre-cut; designing a fall protection system to be utilized during deck removal; analyzing the bridge for specific equipment loads to be used during deck removal; and determining the cut locations for the pier removal. SID was instrumental in ensuring the demolition plans were fully coordinated with and approved by the Missouri Department of Transportation, the United States Coast Guard, and the Union Pacific Railroad. On April 11th, 2019 the 80 year old bridge was successfully brought down using 750 copper linear shaped charges.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Beginning in 2018, the historic Lyric Theater located in downtown Kansas City, MO underwent a major $35 million renovation to transform the building into a full-service YMCA. To preserve its iconic look, a 30 foot wide section of the original structure, including the historic front façade and lobby areas, was to remain protected and in place while the remaining structure was demolished and replaced with a modern structure. The original theater structure was constructed in 1926 and consisted of custom steel plate girders and columns, concrete-encased steel framing, concrete slabs and frames, and masonry façade. Special Inspections & Design provided specialty structural engineering services to facilitate the safe demolition of the original structure. This included preparing a site-specific phased demolition plan detailing the order of operations for the demolition process; analyzing the existing southern portion of the building remaining in place and designing temporary wind shoring to be used until the new structure is completed; designing and detailing temporary shoring to resist lateral earth pressure in the basement until the new structure is completed; designing and detailing shoring towers to facilitate the removal of the existing balcony; and designing and detailing a plan to use rubble backfill to temporarily stabilize basement walls in the north portion of the building during demolition.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In 2016, Olin Library was renovated to add 20,000 square feet of study, collaboration, instruction, and exhibition space. Due to land constraints around the library, which is located in the middle of campus, the additional space was added by constructing two new sub-levels below an area of the structure that did not previously have a basement level. Special Inspections & Design provided specialty structural engineering services when the existing drilled pier foundations were discovered to end at an elevation above the new planned basement floor. SID designed a custom structural steel shoring system to support the existing building while the drilled piers were removed and replaced with new steel columns and concrete footings. Since the library remained in use during the entire construction process, SID assisted the general contractor in careful coordination and continuous load cell monitoring during the removal and replacement of the inadequate foundation to ensure the safety of the structure and its occupants. SID also provided on-site structural support and certified welding inspections during the construction of the temporary shoring system and connection of the new columns to the existing building.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Lewis and Clark Community College (LCCC) is a two-year higher education institution with multiple campuses in the metro east area. The Godfrey campus, located on the grounds of the former Monticello College, is known for its historic and beautiful location. The Benjamin Godfrey Memorial Chapel is one of the most notable buildings on the Godfrey campus. It was built in 1854 and moved to its current location in the 1990s. It is a wood-framed structure that has undergone various additions and renovations since its construction and still has some of the original panes of glass in its windows. Special Inspections & Design provided structural engineering services to analyze the existing chapel. Starting in fall of 2018, SID made multiple site visits to visually inspect the structure and conduct a field survey. Items surveyed and inspected include the ground floor, attic, and bell tower within the chapel. SID provided reports that detailed the structural findings and included recommendations for repairs.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Carmelite monastery and chapel located in St. Louis, Missouri were constructed in the 1920s. Beginning in 2016, Special Inspections & Design provided structural engineering services for multiple renovation and repair projects for the historic structures. These projects have included the renovation of the iconic bell tower; multiple façade and entryway repairs; and repair of a damaged carport structure. SID’s services have included structural steel design; design and detail of bell tower column and handrail cores; and providing a safe sequence of construction. Because of the age and importance of these buildings, SID has worked closely with the contractors and caretaker to provide solutions to preserve the historic appearance of these structures and ensure that the nuns that reside in the monastery and the many visitors are disrupted as little as possible and able to travel safely throughout the construction.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The EDGE@BRDG is a four-story, 160,000 square foot building to be the new headquarters of Benson Hill Biosystems, a crop improvement company discovering the genetic diversity of plants. The building is located on the Danforth Plant Science Center's campus and is composed of a structural steel frame. Special Inspections & Design provided special inspections for the steel-to-steel connections both in the fabrication shop and in the field. Inspections consisted of visual inspections of welds, bolts, and anchor rods; Ultrasonic shearwave testing on all complete joint penetration welds; and review of fabrication drawings and specifications. The inspections were performed by Certified Welding Inspectors and Level II Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) technicians and complied with the following codes: International Building Code (IBC); American Welding Society (AWS): and American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). SID also designed the steel to steel connections for the building. More information on the connection design can be found here.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Lemay Wastewater Treatment plant is one of the largest plants in the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District and can treat up to 340 million gallons of water a day. Special Inspections & Design provided a condition assessment on existing pipes by an API 570 certified inspector. The existing carbon steel Return Activated Sludge piping was evaluated for the below grade tunnels that run east and west in the plant. The assessment consisted of visual inspections of current conditions; nondestructive testing to determine remaining wall thickness; visual inspections of welded and bolted connections; observations of pipe saddles and hangers for wear, deflection, and missing components; and a detailed API 570 in-service piping report.</image:caption>
