Throughout 2020 & 2021, Special Inspections & Design was the lead engineer for the demolition of a 50 year old power plant in Page, Arizona. SID worked on the Navajo Generating Station Decommissioning & Demolition (NGS) project closely with Independence Excavating, Inc., who won several awards for the 2021 Colorado Associated General Contractors Industry Gala. These awards include the bronze award for “Meeting the Challenge of a Difficult Job (Subcontractor)” and “Jack Mincher People’s Choice - Specialty Contractor “ Award.
SID provided specialty structural engineering to facilitate the safe demolition of the boilers, turbine building, and limestone handling below-grade structure. This included providing site-specific demolition plans detailing the order of operations for the demolition process; analyzing the existing steel and concrete structures to remove material before blasting; providing pre-cut details for specific locations throughout the structures; designing temporary cable bracing in areas with damaged existing bracing. The three 200 ft+ tall boilers were imploded in March 2021. Shortly after, the turbine building and limestone handling structure were brought down using traditional demolition methods.
